文章摘要:
This review delves into the multifaceted landscape of plant microbial fuel cells (PMFCs), investigating the affecting factors, configurations, applications, challenges, and prospects that shape their design. A thorough exploration of the affecting factors covering natural factors such as type of living plants, type of microbes and environmental factors as well as man-made factors such as electrode material and design, addition of additives and the diverse array of PMFC configurations are investigated here. The configurations cover the tubular design, flat plate design, sediment type, green rooftop design, constructed wetland and bryophyte PMFC are analyzed for performance comparison, offering insights for researchers. Applications of PMFC for powering ultra-low power remote devices and sensors, biosensing purposes, wastewater treatment, to bioremediation of polluted sites, are showcased to show the versatility of PMFCs. Despite their promise, challenges such as low power output, plant selection and growth, control over microbial species, diversity and electron transfer mechanisms, the long-term stability and durability of PMFC as well as scalability and cost for wide implementation of PMFC, are conversed here as it necessitates innovative solutions. In addition, this paper also provides recommendation of prospects to be considered by future researchers to enhance the development of PMFC.

文章摘要:
The growing global demand for green hydrogen has intensified interest in seawater electrolysis (SWE) as a sustainable pathway, particularly for regions with limited access to freshwater. However, SWE poses unique scientific and engineering challenges that differ from those in purified water electrolysis, including chloride-induced corrosion, parasitic chlorine evolution reactions (ClER), membrane degradation, and catalyst instability in complex ionic matrices. This review provides a critical assessment of recent advances and persistent challenges in SWE, with emphasis on material innovations, membrane selectivity, and cell design strategies. The review begins with an outline of the fundamental electrochemical and thermodynamic principles governing SWE, followed by a detailed discussion on chlorine suppression via advanced electrocatalysts and selective membrane technologies, such as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and emerging bipolar membranes (BPMs). The role of interface engineering, heterostructure formation, and photothermal enhancement in improving catalytic activity and durability is critically examined. Novel electrolyzer configurations, including sulfur-assisted electrolysis, vapor-phase protonic ceramic cells, and boron-doped diamond-supported electrodes were documented based on their potential to enhance energy efficiency and operational lifetime. Additionally, the review integrates techno-economic considerations and sustainability to explain the practical feasibility of SWE systems. By consolidating findings from recent studies, this work identifies key knowledge gaps and outlines future directions for scalable, chlorine-tolerant, and energy-efficient SWE platforms. The merging of materials chemistry, membrane science, and system engineering is essential to transition SWE from laboratory demonstrations to commercially viable hydrogen production.

文章摘要:
Pink hydrogen produced using nuclear-powered electrolysis emerges as a promising zero-emission solution. However, integrating high-temperature processes and nuclear-derived electricity for pink hydrogen production poses inherent safety risks. Hydrogen presents specific challenges due to its unique properties, including high flammability, wide explosion limits, and rapid diffusion. When coupled with nuclear power systems, these challenges are amplified, as the interaction between two inherently high-risk systems introduces new hazards and complexities. Furthermore, pink hydrogen is relatively new to industry and requires comprehensive safety protocols for its safe operation and production. This research conducts a detailed high-level hazard analysis to identify, assess, and control potential risks related to pink hydrogen production. Data and information were gathered through extensive research and team discussions. Various scenarios and consequences were assessed to ensure safe operation and plant performance. Initially, 26 high-risk scenarios were identified. Following implementation of mitigation measures, the number of high-risk scenarios was reduced to 2, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed controls. Implementing these recommendations and design modifications will help manage overall plant risk to a tolerable level. By addressing safety concerns proactively, this analysis contributes to the safe development and advancement of pink hydrogen technology for a sustainable future.
