Advancing AI-enhanced Sensing Technologies for Precision Healthcare and Human-Machine Interaction
【Abstract】
Smart sensors are revolutionizing healthcare, human-machine interaction, and environmental monitoring by offering innovative solutions for real-world challenges. This lecture will highlight our team’s recent advancements in smart and flexible wearable sensor technologies, focusing on their novel designs, enhanced performance, and wide-ranging applications. By integrating advanced materials with AI-driven algorithms, these sensors exhibit exceptional sensitivity, adaptability, and functionality, making them ideal for applications such as sign language recognition, human-machine interfaces, physiological signal monitoring, and health assessments. Key developments discussed in this lecture include: (1) Tactile- transparent Wearable (TTW) Sensors that combine flexible electrodes and dielectric materials to achieve clinical-grade accuracy in cardiovascular monitoring, enabling continuous risk detection and advancing preventive healthcare; (2) Epidermal Sensors made from electronic slime, offering exceptional flexibility, self-healing capabilities, and high precision in motion recognition, ensuring seamless integration with the human body; and (3) Nanoparticle-based E-skin Sensors, 3D Ear-conformable Devices, and Smart Masks, enabling applications such as physiological monitoring, respiratory health assessment, facial expression detection, and advanced human-machine interaction. These advancements underscore the transformative potential of smart sensing technologies to address contemporary challenges in healthcare and beyond. By leveraging cutting-edge materials, intelligent algorithms, and innovative designs, flexible and wearable sensors are paving the way for smarter, more adaptable solutions that enhance human well-being and improve the quality of life across diverse fields.

【BIOGRAPHY】
Wen Jung Li is a Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Vice-President (Talent and Inter national Strategy) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). Before joining CityUHK in 2011, he was with The Chinese University of Hong Kong , where he served as Director of the Centre for Micro and Nano Systems. Earlier, he held R&D roles at NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The Aerospace Corporation, and Silicon Microstructures Inc. in California. Prof. Li’s research group has made significant contributions to the fields of micro/nano sensors, micro/nano robotics, and AI-sensors, with publications featured in prestigious journals such as Nature Machine Intelligence, Nature Methods, Nature Communications, Science Advances, and Advanced Science. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, ASME, and AAIA, and a “100 Talents” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.He served as President of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (2016–17) and founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine and the IEEE Open Journal on Nanotechnology. With over 20 US/China patents, Prof. Li has fostered innovation, supporting the establishment of four startups by his students since 2004. These ventures have developed intelligent sensing products for industries ranging from aerospace to sports management, earning prestigious awards such as the Gold Medal at the Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days (2021), the Best Innovative Technology Project Award from the China Hi-Tech Fair (2020), and the Gold Award at the 2018 World IoT Expo. Prof. Li’s current research interests include bio-MEMS, super-resolution microscopy, and intelligent cyber-physical sensors. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. in the same field from UCLA.
